Application Form Tips

Tips for Completing Forms

  • Always complete all fields in a job application by writing “n/a” for anything that doesn’t apply.
  • Keep a Word document with past job and education information so you can cut and paste information into forms and save time.
  • If you are required to cut/paste your resume into a text box, be sure the text is readable – If the text looks messy on your screen keep in mind that is exactly what the employer will see!
  • For paper forms, make a copy first so you have a back-up if you make a mistake, then print neatly in black ink.

You’ve Been Fired
Most applications ask why you left a position.  If you have been fired, try to explain this in positive terms.  Some professionals suggest writing “Job Ended” as a way to write this on your application.  You can then explain this further during an interview if requested.

Criminal Convictions
Some applications ask the question “Have you ever been convicted of a crime?”  It is critical to answer this honestly!  Many employers will overlook small crimes, but will NOT overlook a falsified application. If there is an opportunity to explain, do so in an apologetic manner. 

 

“Received a minor consumption during my freshmen year of college.  I matured as a result of this mistake and have had no criminal offenses since.” 

Supervisor Contact Information
If your supervisor is no longer at the organization, write down the supervisor’s name, the main organization number and note in the application “Supervisor no longer with company.”  If you do not want them to contact a current or past supervisor, include their information but write “Please discuss before contacting.”

Salary Requirements
If a job application requests salary requirements for the position, try to avoid a specific number that may price you too high or too low.  Instead write “negotiable” or “open.”  If you do include a number use a range based on thorough salary research.
