Megan Wannarka

Degree:    Bachelor of Science
Major:      Clothing Design

Years in the Field:    1
Current Job Title:      Exhibit Coordinator
Organization:            Skyline Exhibits, Inc.

How did you find this job?
I applied for a temp position, and during my interview I was told that I was overqualified but that this company had other positions that might be a good fit for me. My product development knowledge and ability to actualize a concept into an functioning product are very helpful in this position.

Previous Job Titles and Organizations:
Patternmaker, Vanson Leathers— Fall River, MA
Undergraduate Research Assistant, College of Human Ecology, U of MN
Men's Technical Design Intern, Target Corporation— Minneapolis, MN
Associate, Top Shelf Custom Tailor Shop and Clothiers— Minneapolis, MN.

Please describe your job:
Working with a dealer network who sells to our client base, I review requests for estimates for exhibit booths ranging from 10' x 10' to 20'x20'. I quote the hardware, graphics, crates and shipping for each job and communicate with dealers and their artists to arrive at a final design that the client is happy with. Meanwhile, I internally manage/maintain many responsibilities at once, each with its own timeline and internal department:  CAD (computer aided design), custom quotes, production, consolidation, setup and shipping. I work with many different dealers' offices, internal personnel and others to bring a concept to actualization.

What from your undergraduate educational experience was most helpful in preparing you for this career?
Having a well-rounded work background while I was in school.

What is the biggest misconception about this occupation or field?
That it's not creative. There are so many ways to put things together, and everyday I discover another way to do it that is either cheaper, easier, or looks better. I deal with form over function everyday. I'm surprised I enjoy it as much as I do.

What advice do you have for current students?
Network: You'll find most jobs through people you know. It’s never too early to start doing informational interviews.
