How did you find this job?
My sister also works in this field, so she introduced me to the owner of the company.

Please describe your job:
I work for a small consulting firm with only five employees. My job varies with each project that we work on. I have performed many tasks, including: land cover classifications, natural resource inventories, wetland delineations, prairie restorations, and controlled burns, as well as all the day-to-day tasks that keep a small business running.

What from your undergraduate educational experience was most helpful in preparing you for this career?
The GIS courses I took at the University were the most relevant to my current job. I also completed a GIS-related internship that proved to be helpful.

What has surprised you the most about this occupation or field?
Working for a small company in any field is a challenge. I often have to learn new skills as new projects come in. There isn't anyone at the company to give me instructions so I have had to be creative and come up with solutions on my own.

What advice do you have for current students?
Maintain connections with mentors, professors and other professionals from your field of interest while you are in school. Don't be afraid to get involved in activities or groups on and off campus.
