Referrals to Employers

As a faculty member who has developed solid relationships with members of the community, you may find yourself receiving job postings from employers who hope to hire a student from your department.  Faculty have also shared with us that employers will sometimes ask for the names of quality students who can fill their open position.

In order to be compliant with the University of Minnesota’s Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Policies, job opportunities should be shared with all students.  An efficient way to do this is to direct your contact to the Employer section of the St. Paul Campus Career Center web site.  Instructions for posting a position are clearly outlined at this web page.  You can also forward the job posting to the St. Paul Campus Career Center email at spccc@umn.edu.  We will contact the employer directly and encourage them to post their position on GoldPASS.  This will ensure a wide audience for the employer and once the job is posted, we certainly hope that you will encourage your top students to apply!

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (of which the St. Paul Campus Career Center is a member) outlines the legal ramifications of direct referrals to employers in their article entitled A Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring.  This article is a great resource to learn about the legal concerns to direct referrals.
