A personal statement is an introductory essay you can use to demonstrate how and why you are an ideal candidate for graduate education.
In your essay, consider including any of the following:
Trace the history of your interests, and experiences related to your field.
Prove your ability to perform through specific examples.
What are your specific study interests, and why do you hope to study there?
Make a statement of your long term purpose and/or career goals.
Refer the reader to supplementary materials, such as research projects, seminar papers, or your portfolio.
There are many resources available in the St. Paul Campus Career Center to help you write your personal statement, including “Graduate Admissions Essays” by Donald Asher. Take the time to “fine-tune” and ask several people to critique your statement. Personal statement reviews are available in the St. Paul Campus Career Center by calling 612-624-2710.
