I found the job posted on the League of Minnesota Cities website.

Previous job titles and organizations:
Kaplan, Strangis and Kaplan, P.A.
    File Clerk
Prairie Home Inspections
    Housing Inspector Intern

Please describe your job:
I developed the One and Two Family Non-Owner Occupied License Inspection Program for the City of St. Louis Park. All 600 or so of these homes (single-family, duplex, etc.) are inspected every two years. In addition, I respond to property maintenance and zoning complaints along with clutter, trash, and unsanitary residences, whether they are owner-occupied or rental units. When working with unsanitary or clutter homes I partner with Adult and Child Protection Services of Hennepin County.

What from your undergraduate educational experience was most helpful in preparing you for this career?
The Housing Studies classes, especially those taught by Marilou Cheple and most of the Construction Management courses were helpful. I also took drafting classes through the Interior Design department that helped me visualize the information I learned through Marilou Cheple’s classes. But my internship was the most valuable experience because it involved using what I learned in real-life situations.

What surprised you the most about this occupation or field?
It was necessary for me to gain a greater technical knowledge about homes after graduation. For example, I had a lot to learn about building and property maintenance codes.

What advice do you have for current students?
Intern in the field and learn a second language.
