Current Job Title:      Business Owner
Organization:            Beyond Kitchens

How did you find this job?
I began this business 12 years ago. I had worked most of career prior to this in the housing remodeling business and new housing construction business.

Please describe your job:
I primarily do sales and estimating for the company.  I supervise two kitchen designers and a project coordinator. I also do some design work myself. In addition, I handle the company’s bookkeeping.

What from your undergraduate educational experience was most helpful in preparing you for this career?
Business law classes, furniture and housing history, color classes and design presentation courses. Also, organizational skills are critical in starting your own business.

What is the biggest misconception about this occupation or field?
Sales and marketing: The best design doesn't always sell. I had to learn how to present and sell my ideas and myself to clients.

What advice do you have for current students?
I would tell them to think beyond the typical design fields (ie: residential or commercial interior designer). Look at the construction industry- remodeling or new construction. There are many opportunities for creative people. Also, be aware that you may own your own business in the future—take some accounting classes to prepare for this possibility.
