When is the best time to do an internship?
Freshmen or sophomores can do internships, as can first year graduate students. Recent national research shows that 50% of employers expect students to have 2 to 3 internships by graduation. Bottom line–you can and should consider doing internships regardless of your year in school and regardless of your age…employers enjoy working with non-traditional students.
Are internships paid?
While internships with non-profits are sometimes unpaid many with for-profits are paid. In 2007, the average paid intern received $15.99 per hour.* There are also internship grants available to help you financially. See our internship Credit and Funding web page for more details.
Do I have to get credit for my internship?
Some programs require a credit bearing internship, others don’t. A position doesn’t need to have formal academic credit to be considered an internship. See our internship Credit and Funding web page for more details on securing credit.
How many hours per week are required for a typical internship?
Internships occurring during the academic year typically require a commitment of 10-20 hours per week. During the summer, internships are often full-time. Students typically find that working a minimum of 10 hours a week will allow for a quality learning experience.
Can I do an internship if I am an international student?
Yes you can! International students can participate in internships if it’s a requirement for your degree, but authorization is required. You may also utilize Optional Practical Training (OPT) time before you graduate to gain experience. Visit International Student and Scholar Services in 190 Humphrey Center for more information.
