Employers invest a lot of money and time in interviewing candidates for positions. There are also many other job seekers out there that are equally deserving of interview opportunities. Following proper interview etiquette both before, during and after the interview is critical to making a positive impression on employers and to showing respect for your fellow job seekers:
Before
-
Always notify an employer if you will be late for an interview...avoid being late at all costs!
-
If you decide you no longer want to be considered for a position, call and withdraw your name immediately so that another candidate can be considered.
-
Always be 100% honest on your application materials – employers do check.
During
-
Stand, smile, make eye contact and use a firm hand shake when meeting individuals at an interview.
-
Always be polite and courteous in an interview – especially to administrative assistants and support staff you may encounter when arriving.
-
Let the interviewer take the lead showing you where to go and where to sit.
After
-
Always send a formal thank you note to an employer within 2 days of your interview. For an outline of what to include click on Thank You Letter Sample.
-
If you are notified that you did not receive a position, be positive and respectful. You want to end on a positive note should another position become available in the organization.
-
If you know of others interviewing for the position, do not share with them the questions asked.
