Your resume is your first opportunity to market yourself to employers.  As a result, it is critical that you invest quality time in preparing and fine-tuning this document.  Keep in mind some of the following quotes from a hiring manager who reviews hundreds of resumes:

“Initially, I’ll scan [your resume] for 25 seconds…Scanning is tougher for me if your resume is hard to read, poorly organized or weighs more than a pound.”

“It’s not my job to be charitable.  It’s to be suspicious, cynical and conservative.”

“If you want to earn my respect, skip the varnish and adornments and let your accomplishments speak for themselves.  Pretend you get $1,000 for every adjective and adverb you leave out.”

Quotes from Douglas Richardson’s The Secrets of Writing Executive Level Resumes, Wall Street Journal Career Journal, April 2001.
