Curriculum Vitae Categories

A curriculum vitae may include a lot of the same categories as a resume.  Because it is being tailored toward academic positions, it is common to also include categories that relate very specifically to academia.  A sample of these categories is listed below.

  • Teaching Experience
  • Teaching Interests
  • Research Experience
  • Research Interests
  • Professional Interests
  • Professional Experience
  • Academic Appointments
  • Consulting Experience
  • Advising Experience
  • Committee Membership
  • Professional Associations/Memberships
  • Special Training
  • Conferences Attended
  • Conference Presentations
  • Lectures and Colloquia
  • Scholarly Presentations
  • Publications
  • Research Awards
  • Grants and Contracts
  • Patents
  • Exhibitions
  • Fellowships
  • Credentials

For those students just completing their Bachelor’s Degree, they may not have experiences that relate to the above listed categories.  As a result, their resume and CV may look very much the same.

Format and Appearance

Though a CV format is very similar to that of a resume, there are some specific differences.  See details on how to format your CV, and visit the Hints section of this web site.  Some specific things to note about CVs:

  • Your education section is typically listed first on a CV

  • Categories should be organized so the most relevant information is toward the top

  • CVs typically review your entire academic history and therefore are several pages long for those with faculty positions and PhDs
