How did you find this job?
I applied to the Peace Corps.
Please describe your job:
My job doesn't have typical daily tasks. That is what I love about my field. My primary responsibility is to build the capacity of my counterpart organization, the Belize Audubon Society. My work has involved grant writing, project evaluations, community and school outreach, environmental summer camps, training park staff, implementing awareness campaigns, field research, developing interpretive centers, and web-site development.
What from your undergraduate educational experience was most helpful in preparing you for this career?
How you spend your time outside of the classroom will have a great impact on your personal and professional development. Be active in a student organization or professional society, get to know faculty and staff on a personal level. Look for opportunities to volunteer, attend conferences, and network with working professionals.
What is the biggest misconception about this occupation or field?
No surprises yet, I knew what I was getting into.
What advice do you have for current students?
To maximize your potential for employment you must be active in your pursuit. Network and try to build on your weaknesses. Ask people to critique your resume and cover letter before sending it in to potential employers. If you don't get a job you applied for then ask the hirer for constructive criticism. Find out what skills you need to make you a better candidate. Request an informational interview with a working professional. An informational interview involves talking with people who are currently working in the field to gain a better understanding of an occupation or agency -- and to build a network of contacts in that field. Ask people within your network for guidance. Maybe they are aware of a job opening that has not been advertised.
