Make Connections

There are many ways to connect with people in your industry without a formal informational interview or mentor program relationship.  A few strategies for doing this are listed below.

  • Introduce yourself to guest speakers in class.  Ask them a few questions about their career.

  • Attend alumni social events related to your major, college or the University.

  • Join student groups related to your major.  Talk with guest speakers after meetings, or better yet, volunteer to schedule guest speakers for the organization.

  • Company tours are often available through college offices or departments.  Attend these tours and talk with people you meet while on site.

  • Join a professional association related to your field.  Volunteer at one of their events as a way to get to know other members.

  • Ask to job shadow someone you already know in a related field.  Introduce yourself to others you meet while visiting the organization.

  • Volunteer at an organization of interest and get to know those in occupations of interest.
