Succeeding in Internships

One of the most important things that students can do to ensure a great internship experience is to request regular meetings with your supervisor.

In these weekly or bi-weekly meetings plan to cover the following items:

  • Set a list of goals for the internship and review them with your supervisor; revisit the goals in future meetings.
  • Give progress updates on projects and ask for new projects (or propose projects) when needed.
  • Ask questions to better understand the position and the organization.
  • Request feedback on your performance.
  • Ask if you can meet with other employees to learn about their positions.

At the conclusion of the internship have a final meeting to discuss:

  • Your performance in the internship (ask for a written evaluation).
  • Using your supervisor as a reference in the future.
  • Keeping copies of documents you have worked on for your professional portfolio.
