Freshmen: Awareness

  • Explore your interests, motivations, values and skills.

  • Meet with a career professional in the St. Paul Campus Career Center for help with self-assessment, occupational research and job search techniques.

  • Confirm your choice of a major and identify related careers.

  • Visit the St. Paul Campus Career Center to research careers of interest and explore career resources online for helpful career exploration information.

  • Research majors of interest via the Undergraduate Catalog and by visiting academic department web sites.

  • Get off to a good start academically - build a good study and work record to demonstrate your ability to handle multiple responsibilities.  Many employers prefer to interview students with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

  • Get involved in clubs or student organizations. Employers who work directly with our office prefer to recruit students with solid examples of involvement and leadership. Visit the Student Activities Office for a list of sample involvement opportunities.

  • Visit the Office of Human Resources to find a related campus job or stop by the Career and Community Learning Center to secure a volunteer position related to your major/career goals.

  • Begin saving items for your portfolio…for all majors!  Include examples of your work from class, jobs or student activities (special achievements, writing, honors, or letters of recommendation), which you will use to develop goals and show to employers in interviews.

  • Explore options for international study and internships by attending a Learning Abroad Center First Step Meeting.
