Sophomores: Exploration

  • Learn who you are and what you do well through personal reflection of your interest, strengths and values.

  • Visit with a career professional at the St. Paul Campus Career Center to learn self-assessment, occupational research and job search techniques.

  • Meet people in your field and learn about a career of interest by conducting informational interviews or job shadows.

  • Introduce yourself to faculty, talk with them about your career interests.

  • Explore opportunities to do research with faculty.

  • Create a resume and conduct a mock interview in preparation for possible internships.

  • Attend campus career-related activities (career fairs, job and internship search workshops).

  • Obtain an internship, volunteer experience, freelance, part-time or summer job to test your chosen career field – explore GoldPASS for positions posted with the St. Paul Campus Career Center.

  • Run for a leadership position within a student organization, attend some leadership workshops through the Student Activities Office or consider the Leadership Minor.

  • Begin creating a portfolio with examples of your work (special achievements, writing, honors, or letters of recommendation), which you will use to develop goals and show to employers in interviews. FOR ALL MAJORS!

  • Create a web-based portfolio using the University's Electronic Portfolio.

  • Investigate professional organizations in your career field using the Associations Database.

  • Consider setting a date for studying abroad in conjunction with your advisor and the Learning Abroad Center.

  • Receive guidance from a professional in your field by signing up for your college Mentor Program.
